Group programs are valuable
complement to individual therapy

What is Group Therapy?
At Calder Psychology, our in-person therapy groups provide an effective and complementary approach to individual treatment. These sessions bring together individuals facing similar challenges to work collaboratively in a small group setting. Each group is facilitated by experienced Group Leader psychologists and an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker, all of whom are trained in group dynamics and committed to creating a safe, confidential environment. Within this space, participants can build new skills, explore personal boundaries, and share their experiences and insights.

The core aim of group therapy is to foster a therapeutic community where individuals can connect with others navigating similar issues. This shared journey helps reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness, offering reassurance that you’re not alone. Listening to others’ stories can offer new perspectives on your own challenges and provide practical strategies for coping and growth.
Each group is tailored to address a specific focus area, such as anger management, communication and relationship skills, emotional regulation, trauma, ADHD, autism, or substance use.

FAQ
How do I access the Medicare rebate?
Eligible participants can access Calder Psychology’s Group Therapy Programs under Medicare’s Better Access Initiative.
To receive a rebate, participants must provide Calder Psychology with either:
-
A referral from their psychiatrist or paediatrician specifically for group therapy, or
-
A Mental Health Care Plan and referral from their GP that includes the appropriate Group Therapy item number (see below).

How much is the rebate?
Depending on the clinician facilitating the program, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate of $21.60 per session with a Social Worker, or $24.65 per session with a Psychologist.
To claim the rebate, you must submit both your referral and Mental Health Care Plan before the program begins.
Your referral must include the Group Therapy Item Number (i.e., 80170 for Social Worker, or 80120 for Psychologist) and be dated prior to the start of the program.
Note: A referral is not required to book or attend the program if you do not intend to claim the rebate.
How do I claim the rebate?
For participants with an eligible referral, a receipt will be emailed after each attended session. This receipt can be used to claim the Medicare rebate.
Please note that rebates cannot be claimed for sessions not attended. Additionally, Medicare requires a minimum of four participants per session for rebates to be applicable. As such, we cannot guarantee the rebate if total attendance falls below this threshold due to participant non-attendance.
Is it covered under Private Health Care?
If you wish to access your private healthcare cover, please check with your provider if you are entitled to a rebate from your private health insurance policy.
