Group Therapy in Perth

at Calder Psychology

Our group therapy in Perth offers a supportive space where people facing similar challenges can connect, share experiences, and build practical skills together.

Led by experienced psychologists and mental health professionals, each program follows a structured, evidence-based approach to improving emotional wellbeing. Participants benefit from the strength of a therapeutic community, where shared understanding helps foster insight, confidence, and meaningful personal growth.

Whether used alongside individual therapy or as a stand-alone support, group therapy can help people gain new perspectives, develop coping strategies, and move forward with greater clarity and resilience.

What is Group Therapy?

Group therapy brings together a small group of individuals who are experiencing similar challenges. Guided by trained psychologists and an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker, these sessions create a structured and confidential space where participants can learn new skills, explore personal challenges, and support each other.

Each program is designed around a specific focus area, such as:

  1. ADHD and attention challenges

  2. Relationship and communication skills

  3. Social skills development

  4. Trauma recovery

  5. Emotional regulation

  6. Anger management or behavioural support

How Group Therapy Helps

Participating in group therapy offers a range of benefits that complement traditional individual counselling. Many people find that working within a therapeutic community allows them to feel less alone while developing practical skills for everyday life.

Group therapy can help participants:

  • gain perspective by hearing others’ experiences

  • develop communication and relationship skills

  • Practice new coping strategies in a supportive setting

  • build emotional awareness and resilience

  • reduce feelings of isolation or loneliness

  • strengthen confidence through shared growth

For many individuals, group therapy provides a powerful opportunity to connect with others while developing skills that support long-term mental wellbeing.

FAQ

How do I access the Medicare rebate?

Eligible participants can access Calder Psychology’s Group Therapy Programs under Medicare’s Better Access Initiative.

To receive a rebate, participants must provide Calder Psychology with either:

  • A referral from their psychiatrist or paediatrician specifically for group therapy, or

  • A Mental Health Care Plan and referral from their GP that includes the appropriate Group Therapy item number (see below).

How much is the rebate?

Depending on the clinician facilitating the program, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate of $26.00 per session with a Social Worker, or $29.70 per session with a Psychologist.

To claim the rebate, you must submit both your referral and Mental Health Care Plan before the program begins.

Your referral must include the Group Therapy Item Number (i.e., 80170 for Social Worker, or 80120 for Psychologist) and be dated prior to the start of the program.

Note: A referral is not required to book or attend the program if you do not intend to claim the rebate.

How do I claim the rebate?

For participants with an eligible referral, a receipt will be emailed after each attended session. This receipt can be used to claim the Medicare rebate.

Please note that rebates cannot be claimed for sessions not attended. Additionally, Medicare requires a minimum of four participants per session for rebates to be applicable. As such, we cannot guarantee the rebate if total attendance falls below this threshold due to participant non-attendance.

Is it covered under Private Health Care?

If you wish to access your private healthcare cover, please check with your provider if you are entitled to a rebate from your private health insurance policy.
