Support for Veterans & DVA Clients

At Calder Psychology, we are proud to support current and former Australian Defence Force (ADF) members and their families through compassionate, evidence-based psychological care.

We recognise that military service can involve unique experiences, challenges and transitions. Whether you are adjusting to civilian life, managing the effects of trauma, navigating relationship or family difficulties, or seeking support for anxiety, depression or stress, our psychologists provide personalised support tailored to your needs and goals.

Through our focus on veterans' mental health, we help individuals build resilience, improve wellbeing and work towards meaningful personal goals. We welcome referrals for eligible Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) clients and are experienced in working within DVA funding arrangements.

Understanding Veterans Mental Health

Military service can shape many aspects of life, including identity, wellbeing, relationships and career pathways. For some veterans, challenges may emerge during active service. For others, difficulties arise during transition to civilian life or many years later.

Our psychologists provide a respectful, collaborative and non-judgemental environment where veterans can explore challenges, build resilience and develop practical strategies to improve wellbeing and quality of life. Through tailored mental health care for veterans, we support individuals in navigating these experiences and working towards meaningful personal goals.

We support veterans experiencing:

  • Anxiety and stress

  • Depression and low mood

  • Trauma and post-traumatic stress

  • Adjustment to civilian life

  • Sleep difficulties

  • Anger and emotional regulation challenges

  • Grief and loss

  • Relationship and family concerns

  • Chronic pain adjustment

  • Identity, purpose and life transitions

  • Autism, ADHD and other neurodivergent presentations

Evidence-Based Psychological Care

Our psychologists utilise evidence-based therapies tailored to each person's circumstances, strengths and goals.

Depending on your needs, support may include:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

  • Trauma-informed psychological interventions

  • Emotional regulation and coping strategies

  • Stress management and resilience building

  • Support through life transitions

  • Family and relationship support

  • Psychological assessment and reporting

EMDR is a well-established, evidence-based therapy that can assist individuals in processing and recovering from distressing or traumatic experiences. It is frequently used in the treatment of post-traumatic stress and may also be helpful where past experiences continue to affect current wellbeing, relationships or daily functioning.

We recognise that every veteran's experience is unique and work collaboratively to ensure treatment is practical, effective and aligned with your personal goals.

Support for Veteran Families

The impact of military service is often experienced not only by veterans themselves, but also by partners, children and families. Effective mental health support for veterans often involves recognising the important role that family relationships play in long-term wellbeing and recovery.

Where appropriate, we work collaboratively with family members and other support professionals to strengthen relationships, improve communication and support the wellbeing of the entire family unit.
